Former U.S present Abraham Lincoln said “Give me 6 hours to chop down a tree, I will spend the first 4 hours sharpening the ax”
The habit No. 7 from the classic book “ the 7 habits of highly effective people” by Stephen Covey is sharpened the saw. This shows how important we must sharpen our saw. What does this mean?
You must commit yourself to sharpen your skills that can move the needle of your goals. This is what you can do. Make a list of the skills that you must have in order for you to excel in what you do. Then, take action to learn the skill set from the master. Because every one of us is a student before becoming a master. Learning from the mentor definitely can bring your skill to the next level.
For example, I list down the skills that I must equip in order for me to become an excellent trainer. The skill sets that I need are presentation skill, marketing, persuasion, negotiation, observation, and etc. Now, I break down each of the skill into the smaller components. Let’s take the presentation as an example. In the presentation, I must know how to grab the attention of the audience, speak with confidence, deliver my message clearly, keep the audience engage with me, body language as well as having the voice that can impact the audience. All this skill set I learn specifically with a different mentor. Voice, I have a vocal coach, body language I have a different coach and others too. Now, pay 100% attention and commit to master the skills and getting better and better each day.
That’s what I am saying about sharpening the saw. Without mastering the skill set that I need to give a presentation, my talk will be lousy and no one would like to listen to my talk then I can’t deliver my message that I want to share.
Let’s make a decision today. You must do whatever you can within your capability to learn more, sharpen your saw.
Next episode I will share with you what you can do to sharpen your saw. Where you can find information and learn.
