In the book of the 7 habits of highly effective people, Habit No. 5 - seek first to understand then to be understood. This is the habit that I think is the most difficult for me personally at this moment. But, I am sure I can become better and better!
Sometime we tense to rush in and give our best advice in the situation, we often fail to take time to diagnose, to really deeply understand the problem first.
In order to listen effectively, we need to practice emphatic listening is so so crucial in the communication today. The meaning behind listening is Listen with the intention of understand and really understand . Get inside another person’s frame of reference/put yourself in their shoes. Most of the time, listening you may think is by our ears. But is much more than that, emphatic listening involves our eyes and heart too! Our eyes to see their body language, any sign from them are not congruent from what they say. Learning to see the body language when you communicate with others. It is of great help to let you understand the real emotion. And we get to use our heart to feel what they feel too! Put yourself in their situation, feel how they feel about the situation.
People want to be understood. How many of us feel good when others listen to us? Ya, it really feel good, isn’t it? When you really listen, the trust happen, the relationship strengthen and then you become influential. You can help them to overcome their challenges that they face and help to transform their life! Because they trust you, your advice or suggestions become their solution! This is all starting from how you listen to them!
